Just curious - when you teach a position or a technique in class, let's say passing from Spider Guard, how long do you usually stay on the subject before moving on? Do you teach it is a single technique or do you pick something specific and continue to develop that for a few weeks / months.
How long do you teach a position or a technique?
Never for months! Jiu-jitsu is so complex, personally I don't like to stick on the same theme for long time. There are so much in jiu-jitsu. I personally do it for max 2 weeks when coaching/teaching, and no more than that, but you need to explore everything about the position top bottom, counters and transitions. You can make "loops" maybe teaching it for one week and then after couple weeks get back on it but with more variations. There are so much variations about spider guard!
I love to teach the variations from top and bottom mixing that up with specific sparring sessions, "shark tanks", "rodizio", rotationals, and more!
That's how I do at Atos HQ and it's been working :))
As coach you must think about the whole team (students), you need to understand that's not everyone who will be playing it, But, everyone must understand and gain knowledge about the technique. Because if you don't play it you probably will need to know how to defend it. And the best way to comprehend how to defend a technique is by understanding it deeply.
If you want to stick with a singular position or situation for months, that's more personal. I suggest you to mention your students to study the situation, position or technique (watching videos, asking questions, privates and watching higher belts doing it) even if you're not teaching it.
Open mind always!
Hope that helps...God bless!
